This species of Fir serves well as an evergreen privacy screen or natural windbreak due to it’s decent one foot average annual growth rate combined with its dense foliage. While Fraser Fir can suffer from root diseases such as the dreaded Phytophthora in wet planting locations, this species is generally less susceptible.

The popularity of Abies balsamea for use as a Christmas tree cannot be overstated.  This is due in large part to its pleasing conical shape, soft dark green short flat needles, and beautiful aroma. Be sure to pause and smell the coniferous odors when you open up a box of these beauties!

The Balsam Fir is so similar to the Fraser Fir that scientists believe that not too long ago [and we’re talking millennia here] they were one and the same. If you were hoping to buy Fraser Fir seedlings and can’t locate any, Balsam Fir are your best bet. In general, Balsam Fir have fewer issues over all than their Fraser Fir cousins.

Wildlife rely extensively on this tree for shelter and also for food [mostly the seed]. Martens, hares and songbirds often taking refuge in thick Balsam Fir stands. Although deer will eat them, they do not prefer Balsams over other food sources. But keep in mind that this species is vulnerable to winter deer foraging when the tree is small.
